15 hours on a plane and what do you get?
  • More sleep than you imagine;
  • no chance to read any of the books you brought;
  • 3 meals on sort of real dishes with real silverware (one was even good...)
  • a chance to see Bulgaria from the air
  • Arrival in Amman Jordan, at 8:30 at night during their worst weather in years.
I slept for possibly 6 hours on the plane.  I wish I had been one of the ones who quickly grabbed an empty set of middle seats.  They got to stretch out across 4 seats for the flight.  I got two, but more room would have been nice.  But overall the flights weren't bad at all.  It was a little weird to "wake up" and get breakfast and have it feel like morning, only to land in Istanbul 2 hours later and have it be 4:30 in the afternoon. Istanbul has the biggest duty-free store I have ever seen, and everything is really expensive.  But I had some yummy icecream, and John and I got to sit and kind of nap on and off for the two hours between the flights.  And the food on the flight from Istanbul was good - chicken skewers with rice and spinach, a salad made with smoked salmon, green beans and yogurt (which I liked, even bit liking salmon.)

After we got to Amman, we took a taxi to ACOR http://acorjordan.org/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1&lang=english where we are staying the first couple of days, until everyone arrives.  It was uneventful, but what they say about drivers here is true.  It is crazy!  No wonder John drives like he does.

We spoke with Alivia for a while, then went to the Souk Sultan down the road from ACOR) to get food.  Falafel and shawerma, both of which were lovely.   And then to a grocery store for some bottled water, and back home.  We went to sleep not long after.

More to come.

We got to Amman, and

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Another SCA Question

When you are at Coronation (or I suppose any event, really) and the Peers swear fealty, do you notice if they swear in unison, with the oath memorized, as opposed to having the herald read and reapeat?

Do the Knights swearing make any more of an impression on you than the other Orders?

Do you notice that in some Orders, no one swears alone?

Do you notice if someone swears multiple times?

I suppose this is more aimed towards those kingdoms who swear en masse, rather than those who do so individually, but I am curious about what people think.

Librarian/Book lover help

We recently acquired a stack of large paperback books (think Osprey Men-at-arms) that were in a smokers home.  They smell icky.

We've currently got them in a sealed plastic tub with baking soda spread around, so that none of them are touching the baking soda but hoping it might take away some of the smell.  Does anyone know of any way to remove smoke smell from books?  Can we sprinkle the baking soda directly on to the books?

Any help would be appreciated.

From my daily calendar, how many of the James Bond Movies starring Sean Connery can you name?

Hint: There are seven total.  I got 6 of them, and for some reason my brain kept telling me To Sir with Love, which I knew was wrong but couldn't get out of my head.

For those not on the other email lists I am on (and my apologies to those who see this more than once):

I am trying to find contact information for Master Thoron Ravenoak, (mka Karl Anderson) who moved to Minnesota from Caid a while ago.  If anyone knows him, or has contact information for him, could you please share mine and/or ask that he contact me?

Thank you so much.

Johnny will produce and star in the movie THe Rum Diary. Denise Chamian is the casting director and has been involved in casting movies such as Pirates of the Carribean.

Begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary details the life and events of Paul Kemp: He's a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction. Thompson delivers a potent story that pushes the sometimes brutal truth of human relations into your face in such a way that it would be absurd to not laugh.

Female or Male All Ethnicities 18 to 65 for extras

This movie is scheduled to be shot in the Wisconsin area. Extras will recieve pay and travel expenses will be covered. Extras will be needed for a 10 day shoot. Please email or call if interested (206)736-2105

2. Add three SCA-related things to the bottom that you've done.
3. Bold everything in the list that you've done.

interesting tidbit

From an email tip I got today:

If 10,000 <people> switch from red meat to a vegetarian diet (no - that doesn't mean just salads) one day per week, in a year we'll avert the emissions produced by driving a car around the equator 288 times.

The website is idealbite.com - the idea behind it is that you can make your world 'greener' one bite at a time, rather than having to take giant drastic steps.  Kinda cool.

People have done this on and off for a while - I thought I would try:

Grab the nearest book.
* Open the book to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

"In a non-stick skillet, cook onion, chicken and marinade for 3 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink."

You haven't heard yet,  Stephen du Bois won Crown in Northshield, for Ailleanne ingen Faelin.  He defeated Sir Leif Haakenson in the finals.  I'm told it was a good tourney.
